RadarScan users--
Well, here it is... there weren't any "bugs" in the original version
(thankfully), but I guess you could say there were a few "mites". That's
why this version is out... V1.1.
One of the updates is the decoding of reports from western US air
traffic control radars. These radar reports are very cryptical and I
had little guidance to go on. I programmed RadarScan to process MDR code
which was printed in the remarks of FAA/ARTCC radar reports. Somehow this
didn't seem right, though, as RadarScan wasn't quite matching up to the
satellite photos. I called one of the FAA air traffic control centers and,
surprisingly, talked to a radar meteorologist who developed the code about
18 years ago! He said that this code doesn't physically represent a storm
and is used merely for labelling radar composites at the National
Meteorological Center.
So, you people out in the western U.S. have good reason to celebrate!
The RadarScan maps of that area look much nicer and more accurate.
As far as other changes... I had a pet peeve with the map being plotted
and not knowing right away whether the program was done or not. If you
had the old version, you'll notice the little status messages at the
bottom of the screen now... very nice.
This doesn't mean much for you demo users, but today I pulled out a map
and the U.S. was swamped in storm activity. My program was plotting radar
heights left and right like crazy. I corrected this... now when you specify
whether to plot storm heights or not (/H), you can now tell the computer
to ignore all tops under a certain level.
That's about it for this update. Thanks to all of you who've registered...
I'm sure you know that you can get updates simply by downloading the
new demo version, which will disassemble into a fully functioning program.
Until next time....
Tim
